Video Editing with Azure Native Qumulo Scalable File Service
This article describes a solution that provides a cloud-based remote video editing environment for 2K/ 4K / 8K content, and which has been engineered to deliver high-performance mezzanine editorial capabilities using Azure-based Adobe Premiere Pro VMs with high-performance storage services provided by Azure Native Qumulo Scalable File Service (ANQ).
With ANQ, content creators, editors, and artists in various geographical locations can work on video editing projects at the same speed and efficiency as if they were located in the same studio using the same local data center for processing and file storage. Video editing teams can work and collaborate remotely and still meet the demands for high-quality video content.
Architecture
The solution is deployed on Azure with selectable performance options and combines Qumulo’s exabyte-scale file data platform and HP Anyware PCoIP services for creative teams to store, manage, and create projects with Adobe Premiere Pro, as shown in the following diagram.

Components
Solution benefits
This solution combines the power of ANQ with HP Anyware to provision a dedicated virtual desktop per editor, allowing simple and easy collaboration with a rich and lossless user experience across shared media assets without disruption.
With ANQ, enterprises with high-performance mezzanine editing workflows can now rapidly deploy a complete studio in the cloud for collaborative, remote editing teams to:
- Meet deadlines faster and easily scale new projects
- Speed productivity with enhanced remote collaboration
- Count on fast, reliable access to applications, content, and clients
- Secure data with built-in, end-to-end data encryption at rest and in flight
Potential use cases
This architecture applies to creative teams that want a fully cloud-based editing environment to enable remote access to high-performance content creation.
Potential use cases:
- Video Editing and Post-Production: Video editors can access high-resolution video files stored on ANQ directly from their HP Anyware workstations. This allows for seamless editing without the need to transfer large files locally. The scalability of Azure and ANQ ensures that as the project grows, the storage capacity can easily be expanded without disrupting the workflow.
Qumulo’s high-performance storage can handle large and high-resolution video files, enabling editors to work smoothly with high-resolution content.
- Remote and Collaborative Editing: With ANQ, multiple editors or team members can collaborate on video projects from different locations. They can work on the same project simultaneously, share assets, review edits, and provide feedback in real-time.
- Flexibility and Mobility: Video editors can access their projects and tools from anywhere with an internet connection. They can access the video editing farm from various devices, including laptops, tablets, or thin clients, without compromising performance or security.
Considerations
Organizations looking to plan and implement their video editing workloads using ANQ should include the following considerations in their planning and design processes.
Scalability and Performance
Azure provides scalable compute and storage capacity as needed, allowing you to easily adjust the computing resources allocated to your HP Anyware VMs as well as the capacity and performance of ANQ based on your video editing workload’s demands. ANQ provides up to 20 GB/s+ of throughput to support any collaborative editing requirements.
Security
The Azure Native Qumulo Scalable File Service connects to your Azure environment using VNet Injection, which is fully routable, secure, and visible only to your resources. No IP space coordination between your environment and the ANQ cluster is required.
HP Anyware offers secure end-to-end encryption for remote access to VMs. This helps protect sensitive video footage and intellectual property, ensuring that only authorized users can access and edit the content.
Care should be taken during design and implementation to ensure that the security of the solution complies with industry best practices, internal enterprise policies, and any applicable legal/regulatory requirements.
Cost optimization
Azure’s pay-as-you-go model allows you to optimize costs by scaling resources to use the capacity when needed. This helps you manage costs efficiently without over-provisioning resources.
The cost of the Qumulo depends on the amount of data on the Azure Native Qumulo Scalable File Service and the performance tier. For details, see Azure Native Qumulo Scalable File Services pricing.
Availability
At the disk level, data redundancy in an ANQ deployment is automatically provided by Azure’s storage services. Optionally, replicating to an ANQ cluster in a second Azure region increases availability by protecting against regional service interruptions.
Resiliency
- Qumulo supports space-efficient snapshots, which provide a point-in-time copy of the file system. Snapshots allow users to recover data to a previous state in case of accidental data deletion, data corruption or data loss.
