Qumulo DataBytes: 86% of Orgs Using Public Cloud for Active Data Storage

Authored by:

Based on the ESG Research Survey conducted in partnership with Qumulo, Hybrid Cloud Trends and the Role of Active Unstructured Data, January 2020, 86% of organizations are currently utilizing the public cloud to store active data, most often for file storage.

Enterprise organizations of every size, in every industry, are undergoing a digital transformation. They are being urgently challenged to derive value from their unstructured (file) data in order to create new products, innovative business models, and connect with their customers. The products they create with their data is their competitive advantage. They are looking to data-driven insights to accelerate innovation and to optimize business investments.

One way to accelerate this innovation is to make this unprecedented amount of file data readily available to artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) applications and users. Having this file data in the cloud ensures that it is usable and accessible to applications and individuals regardless of location. The cloud plays a central role in meeting the demands of the business of these unstructured data environments. This flexibility is required to be able to continually derive value from this key organizational asset.

We all recognize that the cloud is here to stay, but we should also recognize that the traditional data center (being on-prem) is likely not going away anytime soon. The challenge for most organizations is to figure out how to optimize both environments while minimizing resources and cost. By optimizing these environments – on-prem, the cloud or even multicloud – ensures that decisions can be made based on maximizing the value of the file data, not on where the data is located. Oftentimes it is beneficial, or even required, to move data either permanently or temporarily to a different environment to ensure availability and accessibility for the applications or users who need it.

IT organizations are being asked to not only optimize application workflows on-prem, in the cloud, and/or across a hybrid environment, but also to deliver on organizational mandates for data protection, retention, and security. The challenge is, how do you seamlessly move and manage this file data across these various environments while maintaining security, data protection, accessibility, and minimizing costs?

Qumulo provides enterprise-proven hybrid cloud file storage and cloud file data services for our customers around the world. Qumulo makes it simple to consolidate your unstructured data with a single solution that provides real-time data visibility, scalability, automation, and ease-of-use to meet your performance, processing, and data retention requirements.

Real-Time Data Visibility
Qumulo’s built-in analytics engine provides organizations with real-time visibility across their entire set of workloads. Given the unrelenting file data growth and the continuous cost pressures, most IT organizations need Qumulo’s clear visibility into file sizes, projects, owners, and retention dates. Having insight into this information also lets organizations accurately estimate completion times and resource requirements, per workflow if desired.

Scale
Often this file data consists of multi-petabytes of data with trillions of files and it is growing by double digits annually. Organizations need the flexibility to add storage on-demand whether on-prem or in the cloud. On-demand storage is defined as having no down time, automatic re-balancing of all storage assets, and minimal IT resources needed to instantly expand the storage environment. Being able to add storage on-demand requires the organization to have a real-time view into the rate of storage consumption. This detailed, real-time storage consumption insight is provided by the built-in analytics engine within Qumulo’s hybrid file software.

With Qumulo, organizations can easily and seamlessly increase capacity, either on-prem or in the cloud, and feed data into AI/ML applications, while storing large file content securely regardless of location. Qumulo’s real-time analytics provide insight into capacity utilization and trends in all environments (on-prem or the cloud), so implementing on-demand capacity expansions and making sure your user needs are always met, is quick and easy.

Simplicity
Qumulo’s file system provides seamless integration between its on-prem and cloud deployments, even between different clouds, with policy-based replication ensuring the latest data is always available. Integrated data protection via snapshot replication is also provided by Qumulo, ensuring data protection and availability can be achieved with a single application, minimizing IT resources.

Simplified management greatly reduces the time that IT system administrators will spend managing their storage. Qumulo’s RESTful APIs enable automation of a variety of administrative yet important tasks such as deploying, tearing down, expanding, shrinking, modifying, and setting permissions on the Qumulo cluster, without having to manually interface with the Qumulo system.

Qumulo gives organizations the flexibility, performance, scale, and analytics they need to gain insight from the petabytes of data that their organizations have entrusted them with, regardless of location.
