The Storage Layer Behind the Digital Grip Truck: How Qumulo Powers BIND Studio’s Turnkey VFX Platform

The “Digital Grip Truck” for Visual Effects

Producing world-class visual effects requires far more than talented artists and creative applications. Behind every shot is a complex technology stack spanning workstations, file storage, rendering, remote access, pipeline software, identity management, color management, asset tracking, review, and delivery.

BIND Studio exists to make that complexity disappear.

Founder Jason Fotter describes BIND as the “digital grip truck for visual effects.” On a physical film set, production teams rent the equipment they need; it arrives ready to work, and the filmmakers focus on making the movie. BIND brings that same model to visual effects production.

On demand, BIND can provision a complete cloud-based VFX environment, including workstations, storage, software, pipeline integrations, remote access, and render capacity. Instead of assembling and integrating multiple technologies themselves, production teams get a ready-to-use environment designed to let artists focus on the creative work.

“We take the work out of assembling the workflow. We are the easy button for that. They can focus on making great visual effects without the burden of worrying about how all the components work together.”

The Challenge: Making Infrastructure Invisible

Visual effects pipelines generate tremendous amounts of data, all of which must remain accessible throughout the production lifecycle. For production teams, building and managing the infrastructure required to support that data can become a significant undertaking.

BIND was created to remove that burden. Its customers include episodic television and feature-film production teams that need sophisticated VFX capabilities without having to build and maintain the underlying infrastructure themselves. Rather than providing another piece of the technology stack, BIND delivers a complete workflow.

That distinction is central to how BIND approaches its business.

“We’re not an IT company. There’s an IT layer to what we do, but that’s not the value. We don’t just give you a remote workstation with some storage. Our value is a complete solution from start to finish to get your visual effects project done.”

Jason Fotter
Founder, BIND Studio

Delivering that seamless experience for customers places significant demands on the technology operating behind the scenes. BIND needed enterprise-grade file storage that could integrate naturally with AWS-based workstations and rendering infrastructure while supporting the established file-system capabilities its VFX workflows depend on, including NFS and hard links.

In many ways, that creates a paradox: the less BIND’s customers have to think about storage, the more capable the storage behind their workflows needs to be.

The architecture also had to accommodate the variability of VFX production. One project might require only a few terabytes of capacity, while another could grow into the hundreds. BIND needed a storage platform that could adapt to those changing requirements while maintaining an efficient economic model as capacity increased.

Technology alone, however, was not enough. BIND also wanted a partner willing to collaborate and explore new approaches as VFX workflows evolved. For Fotter, that relationship with Qumulo began years before BIND Studio.

As co-founder of visual effects company FuseFX, Fotter had already experienced firsthand the storage challenges that emerge when VFX production and rendering move to the cloud. His team had successfully deployed Qumulo on-premises, but as FuseFX began exploring cloud-based rendering on AWS, Fotter was skeptical. Could the same enterprise file-storage experience his artists relied on in the data center really deliver the scale and flexibility required in the cloud?

The answer would shape not only how FuseFX approached cloud rendering but also, years later, how Fotter would build the infrastructure behind BIND Studio.

The Solution: Qumulo

To find out, Fotter and his team began working with Qumulo to bring their VFX workflows to AWS. The team deployed an early Qumulo Amazon Machine Image (AMI) into the company’s AWS account, and the two teams began working together.

The results quickly changed Fotter’s expectations.

FuseFX ultimately used Qumulo to support rendering across hundreds and even thousands of Amazon EC2 instances, giving Fotter firsthand experience running demanding visual effects workloads against Qumulo in AWS. Qumulo provided the familiar file-system capabilities the VFX pipeline depended on while supporting the scale and flexibility of cloud-based production.

Years later, when Fotter began building BIND Studio, that experience made Qumulo a natural choice.

Today, BIND remains storage-agnostic when customers bring their own infrastructure. But when BIND delivers the complete environment, Fotter has a clear preference.

Ícone de citação

“If you want to go from zero to a working visual effects team in days, we lead with Qumulo storage. It gives us the foundation to deliver a complete, end-to-end solution for VFX production.”

That flexibility allows BIND to support productions of virtually any size with the same efficient storage model.

A Partnership Focused on Customer Success

Qumulo’s role within BIND goes beyond technology. Fotter’s relationship with Qumulo stretches back to his earliest cloud-rendering deployments. Close collaboration, responsive support, and a shared focus on making each production successful have defined that relationship.

“Your support is always second to none. There’s always a willingness to work with us, understand what we’re trying to accomplish, and find the right way forward.”

For BIND, that relationship is critical. As production requirements evolve, a technology partner that can collaborate on new architectures and workflows helps BIND confidently deliver the experience its customers expect.

Business Impact

  • Complete VFX environments on demand
BIND combines workstations, storage, rendering, software integration, pipeline services, and remote access into a turnkey environment, allowing production teams to focus on creating visual effects rather than assembling and managing infrastructure.

  • Flexible deployment for every production
Qumulo gives BIND the flexibility to support different production requirements, with capacity ranging from a few terabytes to hundreds of terabytes.

  • Scale for demanding production workloads
Qumulo provides a proven foundation for cloud-based VFX, with Fotter’s experience spanning environments that have supported rendering across hundreds and thousands of Amazon EC2 instances.

  • Efficient economics as data grows
Qumulo lets storage capacity grow without a corresponding increase in compute resources, helping BIND maintain an efficient storage model as production environments scale.
