You will be transferred to AWS

Setup Instructions

Gather install info

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) account
    • AWS account number and target region
    • IAM permissions for full access to EC2 and CloudFormation
    • Account limits large enough for 5TB of EBS storage across GP2 and ST1
    • SSH key-pair for accessing QF2 instance via SSH
    • Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) with at least one subnet configured in the target region
      • Subnet has access to public AWS IP address range to allow QF2 to signal completion of deployment to CloudFormation
  • Amazon Machine Image (AMI) of Qumulo Core for AWS free trial version 2.8.0 or later obtained from AWS Marketplace or Qumulo
    • With free AWS account number in hand, go here and follow the instructions
    • Enter the AWS account number and target region to share the image to your account

NOTE: Modifying the type or size of the EBS volumes in the QF2 AMI will render the software not functional. Please use the block device layout provided in the original AMI.

Free Edition details

Free Edition vs. Multi-node

Running QF2 in AWS as a single node cluster provides 5TB of raw storage so that you can leverage the full power of the Qumulo filesystem. As you begin to use QF2 in AWS, please consider the following:

  • A stand alone single node system cannot be expanded. Adding nodes is disabled in the UI and API.
  • Running QF2 in single node configuration is recommended for evaluation and for workflows where high availability, data durability and performance scalability is not required. It is not recommended for production data without a replication or backup strategy.
  • Consider deploying a 4+ node cluster to enable scaling and data protection. Reference the QF2 in AWS: Multi-Node Cluster article for additional details.

Create Stack

QF2 CloudFormation Inputs

Click here to sign into your AWS account and begin creating the stack with the template. Current supported regions include us-west-2, us-east-1 and eu-central-1. Please modify the above URL accordingly if deploying in a region other than us-west-2.

Fill in the following fields for the CloudFormation template:

Stack name: used to identify the deployed stack

Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance type: Select the desired EC2 instance type

  • For performance testing, the m4.16xlarge instance type is recommended SSH key-pair Name: Select an existing SSH KeyPair that will be installed on the QF2 instance

VPC ID: Select the desired VPC in which QF2 will be deployed

Subnet ID in the VPC: Select the desired subnet in the VPC with which QF2 will be deployed

QF2 administrator password: the temporary administrator password for accessing the QF2 Administrative Console after launch

  • Note this should be changed via the Administrative Console

  • Click the Create button to create the stack

  • Monitor the creation progress under Events on the Stack Details page

  • Wait for the creation status to display CREATE_COMPLETE for the stack

  • Note that this process should take no more than 2 minutes

Once complete, your QF2 free trial instance is ready for access via REST, NFS and SMB. Use the link provided in the Outputs section of the CloudFormation Stack Details view to access the QF2 Administrative Console and login with your temporary administrator password. Note that the same IP address can be used for NFS or SMB client mount points and REST.
