You’ve decided that QF2 is for you. What next?
Deciding where it runs
Qumulo has simple, transparent pricing and, unlike other storage vendors you may have talked to, we won’t nickel-and-dime you or bury you in fine print. When you get a quote, it will break out hardware, hardware support and the QF2 software subscription, which covers all of the features, upgrades, and ongoing support. You can choose the duration of the software subscription. With QF2 you have a choice of runtime environments.
QF2 runs on HPE Apollo Gen9 servers available from the HPE Complete program or from the HPE VOEM program. Qumulo can help get you in touch with HPE and HPE certified resellers.
If you’re interested in the public cloud, contact us and we’ll help you get set up with QF2 for AWS. Set up a QF2 cluster or try it in standalone mode for free and pay only for the underlying AWS cloud infrastructure.
Planning for QF2 in AWS
To run QF2 in AWS you’ll need to choose the instance types you want to use.
You can create a QF2 cluster on m4.2xlarge instances or, for highest performance, on m4.16xlarge EC2 instances. Performance of a QF2 cluster on AWS scales with the number of EC2 instances. For more information, see Qumulo for AWS.
You can evaluate QF2 in AWS for free using a standalone instance. You pay only for the underlying AWS infrastructure.

Planning for QF2 on premises
To create a QF2 cluster on premises, you just need a few things: nodes with Qumulo Core installed, a networking switch and a rack to hold it all. Nodes can be from Qumulo or from HPE.
It’s easy to figure out which node types to buy. You can see the options and technical specs in the product section. Of course, we’ll help you determine the configuration that works best for your workflow, but if you want to do some advance planning, here are three things to consider.
How much storage do you need? You have to determine raw storage space as well as usable storage space. It’s a good idea to build room for growth by considering how much storage you’ll need for the next year or so.
Raw capacity can be converted to usable, provisioned capacity by multiplying raw capacity by the protection efficiency. Protection efficiency depends on the number of nodes in your cluster. The more nodes you start with, the higher the protection efficiency. As a rule of thumb, a six node cluster has 80% efficiency.
Keep in mind that, with QF2, you can use 100% of provisioned capacity, in contrast to legacy vendors who recommend using only 70% to 80% of provisioned capacity. QF2’s efficiency translates into lower cost per TB.
When you add nodes, you scale performance as well as capacity. We’ll help you plan this, but as a rough guide, consider QC104, QC208 and QC260 nodes for workloads that require gigabytes of throughput and above. The QC360 is great for situations where the focus is more on large capacity, such as active archive use cases.
Rack size is a consideration for some customers. You can buy QF2 nodes in 1U, 2U, and 4U units.
Besides the nodes, you’ll need a rack, a network switch and network cables connecting the nodes to the switch. QF2 works with all enterprise Ethernet managed switches that are nonblocking and support IPv6. For 1U nodes, you’ll need 10GbE of networking speed, and for 4U you’ll need a 40GbE switch. In terms of configuration, we only need to know if you want to use fiber optic or copper cables when you place your order.
After you choose your QF2 system, we’ll help you make sure it will meet your needs.
Setting up a QF2 cluster in your data center is amazingly simple. Once your cluster is racked, it can be serving data in less than an hour. You can do the setup yourself or get help from the experts at Qumulo.
